  • Wavelet Transform (WT) Technology for Upstream Operations Digitalization

It is free to all SPE members.

    Date: Thursday, 11 December 2025

    Time: 09:00am CST

    Location: Online

Speaker: Dr. Mohamed Adel Gabry (University of Houston)

    Moderator:  Amit Singh (Chevron)

WT is a powerful mathematical framework that decomposes complex, non-stationary signals into their time–frequency components, exposing transient events and subtle dynamic features that the conventional methods often overlook. We have successfully applied this to analyze a vast continuous stream of spatial and temporal upstream data to reveal the underlying physics of subsurface events critical to O&G upstream operations.

In this webinar, we will showcase WT applications to hydraulic fracturing, reservoir management, and drilling.  We have used it to determine the fracture propagation events, advanced water-hammer modeling, improved fracture-closure during DFITs, and inter-well connectivity dynamics in waterflooding systems. Integrating WT further with machine learning, analytical modeling, and reservoir simulation, researchers have predicted microseismic activity from fracture treating-pressure data and mapped injector–producer connectivity. The same framework has also been applied to identify natural fractures from drilling parameters and to differentiate between induced and natural fracture networks.

We further show the pathways where WT can enable integration across diverse upstream operations—including well testing, production surveillance, artificial lift diagnostics, etc., and be coupled with fiber-optic sensing to empower real-time decision-making in complex subsurface systems—marking a transformative step in the digitalization of upstream operations.

  • Wells Lifecycle Management: Deploy Modern Data Platforms and Agentic AI to Enhance Current & Future

We invite you to attend an SPE webinar titled "Wells Lifecycle Management: Deploy Modern Data Platforms and Agentic AI to Enhance Current & Future Value”.

It is free to all SPE members.

    Date: Thursday, 4 December 2025

    Time: 09:00am CST

    Abstract

Wells’ capital cost is often half of a field development cost. NPV reflecting both the CapEx and OpEx with production revenues needs to be constantly improved to compete with declining green energy costs and increasing reservoir access challenges. Transforming siloed operations between field planning, well construction, production, and abandonment to updating the reservoir models to locate future wells, to a unified data management leading to information transparency and agile execution, can accomplish this.

  • Sept 10th Gaia Europe: Case studies from Iraq: SPE Gaia Masterclass

This event will highlight the key insights and outcomes of an international collaborative initiative involving SPE Italy, SPE Iraq, and UNIDO, supported by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), with the participation of the Ambassador of Iraq to Italy. The initiative addresses key sustainability challenges and promotes solutions for responsible development.

The project aimed to identify technological solutions capable of mitigating the environmental impact of extractive industries in Iraq. It featured two workshops where the Iraqi stakeholders presented pressing environmental issues (air, water, and soil contamination), and Italian companies responded by showcasing pragmatic, ready-to-implement technologies-some of which were adapted from oil & gas applications, such as numerical simulation tools for groundwater modeling and soil contamination screening tools based on core sampling.

The initiative reflects many of SPE Gaia's core principles like an holistic view of environmental and social sustainability (beyond emissions), the value of international partnerships and stakeholder engagement, and most importantly, a commitment to encouraging open dialogue on how Oil & Gas can continue to be part of the solution ('the right side of history') by mitigating the impacts of industrial activity.

Moderated by SPE Italian Section Program Chair, William Palozzo!

  • Name change of MTS to AMTS

To better reflect our technical focus, the “Management Technical Section (MTS)” is now the “Asset Management Technical Section (AMTS).”  This change highlights our emphasis on the technical side of management —solutions that drive business value, reduce risk, minimize downtime, and integrate engineering with operations, economics, finance, and strategy. Our remit for applying asset management concepts includes both:

    • Production and operations of existing assets
    • New capex to grow or enhance asset value

Our focus remains unchanged and continues to be guided by the AMTS taxonomy. Our taxonomy organizes management concepts into five AMTS key areas:

    1. Asset & Portfolio Management
    2. Risk Management & Decision-Making
    3. Strategic Planning & Management
    4. Energy Economics
    5. Professionalism, Training, & Education

Between November 2024 and August 2025, discussions with the SPE Board and MTS leadership revealed that term “Management” could be misinterpreted as soft skills, job titles, SPE management duties, leadership roles etc. The SPE Full Board deliberated and approved the name change in July 2025 and communicated with the MTS board in August. The new name “Asset Management Technical Section” will be formally launched at ATCE 2025 in Houston.

  • SPE Scholarship 2025-2026 Announcement !

  • August 29: Social acceptance of carbon capture and storage (CCS)

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one of the key technologies that could enable a low-carbon energy transition. Some large-scale CCS projects are a reality today. However, scaling up the deployment of CCS by a factor of more than a hundred-fold could be required over the course of this century, with a significant proportion needed before mid-century.

Social acceptance is crucial for the successful deployment of CCS technologies. Public perception, influenced by factors like perceived risks, benefits, and trust in stakeholders, significantly impacts the willingness of communities to support CCS projects. Understanding and addressing these social factors is essential for overcoming barriers to large-scale CCS deployment.

The webinar will offer a range of perspectives around the social acceptance of CCS, including but not limited to topics such as perceived risk, partnership cooperation, policy support and stakeholder engagement.

    Speakers:

    ·       Laurent Jammes, CEO at HEIOS HOLDING

    ·       Jasmin Sharzad, Chief Advisor, Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities (research and subsurface section)

    ·       Marino Varricchio, Policy Analyst at The European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST)

    ·       Moderated by Shannon Gray, Product Development Engineer at 1PointFive and Ipieca’s CCS Task Force Co-chair

This webinar is part of a series on CCS hosted [EW1] by SPE Gaia and SPE CCUS Technical Section, IOGP, OGCI and Ipieca, sharing knowledge and good practice around the scaling up of this technology, including key issues, environmental responsibility, financial incentives, policy, and liability concerns.

  • July 23rd: SPE APAC Gaia Talk - 'Grey to Green' - The Tata Climate Change Initiative

The 2009 COP meeting in Copenhagen was seen as a pivotal moment for a global agreement on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With 115 world leaders present, including President Obama and Premier Wen, expectations were high. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it a defining moment in the fight against climate change. The agreement recognized the need to limit global warming to below 2°C, with a review by 2015 to consider a stricter 1.5°C threshold. However, Copenhagen fell short of a breakthrough, with major progress delayed until the 2015 Paris COP. Anticipating the summit's importance, forward-looking organizations like the Tata Group began early action. With interests in high-emission sectors such as steel, aviation, and power, Tata established a Climate Change Centre of Excellence in 2008. Backed by a steering committee of senior leaders, the COE focused on three levers: building a climate strategy, measuring emissions, and developing internal climate champions. This presentation shares Tata’s journey. Presenter: Arunavo Mukerjee is Professor of Practice in the Department of Sustainable Energy Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Before transitioning to academia, he spent over 30-years with India’s largest industrial conglomerate - the Tata Group - holding key leadership positions across five Tata companies in the energy sector in India, Europe, Africa, and North America. His expertise spans ESG, sustainability, climate change, energy transition, industrial decarbonization, renewable energy technologies, water/wastewater management, and energy efficiency. Throughout his career, he has worked at the crossroads of corporate leadership, policy advocacy, and technological innovation, striving to accelerate the global shift toward sustainable energy solutions

  • SPE Great Yarmouth AGM - May '25

The SPE Great Yarmouth held our annual general meeting today 22nd of May at the Imperial Hotel in Great Yarmouth. The section welcome some new board members who are all keen on levelling up the activities in the region.

    Farewell, Phuc!

Now, every good story has a bit of a bittersweet moment, and ours is saying "cheerio!" to Phuc TRUONG. Phuc, who has diligently served our section for the past two years, was last spotted wandering the streets of Great Yarmouth today, presumably enjoying one last whiff of sea air before being whisked away to the bright lights (and presumably even more meetings) of the SPE London Section. We're fairly certain he's not been shanghaied, just promoted to a more central, and dare we say, rather posh, postcode. We wish him all the very best and hope he remembers us little ol' Yarmouth folk when he's hobnobbing with the big wigs in the capital. Don’t be a stranger, Phuc!

Finally, for those of you who enjoy a good natter about all things technical (and perhaps a free biscuit or two), we're eagerly anticipating our next technical talk. We look forward to seeing our members in the technical talk next Thursday at Aquaterra Energy office in Norwich.

  • 20 May SPE Gaia Webinar: Energy Literacy as a Crucial Tool for Building a Sustainable Future

Energy is a hot button topic of the day. News feeds are filled with energy-related stories, often liberally sprinkled with terms like firming, storage, intermittency and capacity factor, as well as the basic terms “power” and “energy” – which sadly are often confused. Intermingled with the jargon is a plethora of units and acronyms: kW, kWh, PJ, eV, EV, LNG, LCOE, BESS and FESS and hundreds more. Without delving too far into the physics, Nick’s talk will provide some clarity around the basic concepts of energy and power, and show several examples to help sense check some of claims and counter claims that are made in this politically contentious field.

  • The role of O&G Professionals in the Energy Transion

Our officer Phuc TRUONG attended the SPE Beyond The Borders event with the theme focused on the "Role of O&G Professionals in the Energy Transition" in Paris, between the 19th and 21st of March, 2025. The event was organized by SPE France and attended by delegates from 15 different SPE Sections represent 12 countries.

Phuc's feedback highlights that the perspectives shared by the distinguished panelists were both thought-provoking and inspiring. These discussions strongly reaffirmed the critical role that our industry professionals play in driving the energy transition, emphasizing that we are an integral part of the solution, rather than the problem.

According to Phuc, the key takeaway from the Paris event is the undeniable acceleration of the energy transition, occurring at a pace that may not be fully appreciated by the general public. Encouragingly, the O&G industry is demonstrably taking a leading role in this transition. Major oil companies and service providers are making significant financial investments in the development and deployment of various non-fossil fuels energy sources, and CCUS, a trend that is being actively supported by policymakers.

Within Europe, France serves as a notable example of this commitment. The French government has allocated a substantial budget towards the revitalization of its nuclear energy infrastructure, recognizing its potential for low-carbon energy generation. Furthermore, there is a strong emphasis on making "white hydrogen" (naturally occurring hydrogen) and "green hydrogen" (produced through electrolysis, where water is split into hydrogen and oxygen) an affordable and scalable energy source.

On another note, in an exciting development, SPE, with the generous sponsorship of Saudi Aramco, is actively developing a sophisticated genetic Artificial Intelligence (AI) agent. This AI agent is being trained on an extensive corpus of knowledge, including the most widely recognized books within the oil and gas industry and tens of thousands of SPE technical papers. The overarching objective of this ambitious project is to make our collective industry knowledge more accessible and open-sourced in the near future.
